Moving house can be very expensive if you re not careful with your budget. Here are a few tips to help you stay on budget.

First of all, check your eligibility for government assistance, as you may save a few euros:

  • Moving allowance : The CAF offers a moving bonus of up to €1070.23 to be applied for within 6 months of moving house. There are 3 conditions to qualify. Either you are already receiving CAF benefits, or you have at least 3 dependent children, or your move takes place between the first 3 months of your pregnancy and the second birthday of your last child.
  • Mobility assistance: If you re moving out of your city because of your job, don t hesitate to check Pôle Emploi s mobility assistance. These will reimburse your travel, hotel and meal expenses for job interviews.
  • Action logement mobility allowance: This can amount to €1,000 if you re moving closer to your job. You may be eligible if you re unemployed and moving to start a new job, or if you re under 25 and moving for a work-study program or your first job. It is also possible to benefit if your working time is less than 30 minutes by car, or if you now use public transport.
  • Mobili pass: This aid depends on the region, but is still available if you are moving for professional reasons.
  • There are other types of assistance available, depending on your situation (pensioners, students, etc.). You can find all the assistance available for your move at the link opposite: Déménagement : à quelles aides peuvent-vous prétendre? | economie.gouv.fr

Roll up your sleeves and ask for help: Professional movers are quite expensive and can quickly cost you several hundred euros to move your apartment. If you have family or friends in your area, give them a call and ask them for a hand moving your boxes on moving day. This will require a little more effort and organization, but it will be vastly more cost-effective.

If you re moving yourself, you ll need to hire a truck or van. However, it s less often thought of to apply for a parking permit downstairs, to avoid fines or even impoundment for your vehicle. All you have to do is apply at the town hall or on the town s website (some towns charge a fee). It s possible that the town hall will provide you with warning signs, so don t forget to place them 72 to 48 hours in advance so that no one steals your spot.

When you leave your neighborhood, don t forget to notify or cancel your subscriptions. Whether it s for the gym around the corner or to change your address on your home insurance or notify your operator to change your internet subscription. This will avoid nasty surprises on your bank statements.
